THE Guyana Sugar Corporation has confirmed that the striking workers from Diamond Estate have resumed duties after two days of strike action spurred by the protests of workers for severance pay.
According to the release, GuySuCo has been informed that the workers main concern is the pace with which a court case is proceeding. It noted that the legal proceedings were initiated by the (GAWU) in May of this year against the Corporation regarding the impending retirement of the GD section of the estate.
The workers had on Wednesday taken their protest to the Guyana Agriculture and General Workers Union (GAWU) expressing dissatisfaction with the representation that the union offered them.
“The Guyana Sugar Corporation is aware that a group of its workers attached to the Great Diamond section of its LBI/GD estate resorted to strike action over the past two days,” said a press release from the company.
“The Corporation wishes to state that it is not in a position to comment on the issue which is engaging the attention of the High Court. This is in light of several requests by various media houses on the issue at hand.
GuySuCo has been informed that the workers have decided to call off their strike action and returned to work today,” said the release
The Corporation urged all members of its labour force to seek clarification on issues of concern before resorting to strike action.
