Guns don’t kill

THIS letter is written with reference to Guyana Chronicle’s editorial “No effort must be spared to address the crime situation”. According to the Police Commissioner: “We are still of the view that firearms are being rented. There are a few firearms in the system that are being rented. We are still of the view that persons may be sneaking some firearms into the system.
“But the general trend and the general seizures…suggest that there are not that many firearms around. And we have evidence that persons have been renting firearms from others…evidence from what they have said, evidence of what we have found; We actually found people with a bag carrying back the firearms, or going back to give people firearms that they have rented.”
Mr. Commissioner of Police and those in authority, I urge you to take a serious look at the outdated laws there are on the Law books.
These times are different and most certainly the criminals and crimes are different from those committed in the past.
Get rid of this so-called mockery of law called ‘plea bargain’. Doesn’t any one see what’s really going on?
Killers go out and kill, appear in court on murder charges, and plea to the lesser count of manslaughter, only to receive eight years or less.
Once found guilty of murder, the sentence must be life in jail, and life must mean life. I am sure taxpayers will pay and feel a lot safer knowing murderers are behind bars for life.
Mr. Police Commissioner and those in authority, once anyone that is found with a gun, be it his/hers/rented or stolen, the maximum sentence must be life in prison.
Guns don’t kill people, Sir; people kill people.
