BERBICE Police are investigating the discovery of the decomposed body of Elsie Nieuenkirk at her Lot 51 Winkle Road home, in New Amsterdam. The Police received a telephone report, shortly after 11:00 h, which said neighbours in close proximity of the house were affected by an obnoxious odour emanating from the building where the woman lived alone.
Plain clothes ranks found the corpse of the 70-year old on a bed in one of the three bedrooms, lying face upwards after the secured house was forcefully entered.
Neighbours said Nieuenkirk, who once resided in the United States (U.S.), was last seen alive on Saturday.
Several funeral parlours in the town were contacted but, because of the advanced state of decomposition, the body remained where it was discovered until dusk, when overseas- based relatives made arrangements with Lyken’s Funeral Home, in Georgetown, to have it removed.
A post mortem examination is to be done by the Government Pathologist before the septuagenarian is buried.
