THERE has been an ongoing issue that seems as if it will never end and it interests the minds of young women of today like me. Many men in the countryside of Guyana, and Berbice seem to have grown up with no etiquette, manners, skills nor traits in making them a well rounded individual. Why I say so it is quite obvious that the way they carry themselves around society, I am talking about the loiterers and of nowadays young men and even some old ones too, who have attended at least primary school but their attitude and behavior towards women living in their society, speaks volumes of what they really think about them, that is nothing. They believe when they see a nice young woman walking across them they can make kissing and hissing noises to draw their attention whereas they are making a fool of themselves by not having the courage to introduce themselves and then form a conversation which might lead to an exchange of phone numbers or something. Instead, they choose to make themselves fools leaving courtesy aside and acting like they are so superior when they know nothing about the act you just committed and leaving the women to feel inferior.
You are disrespecting women. Come on men. Why are you behaving so disrespectful when most of you were taught traits from young to respect each other and to live a clean life? Men should learn not to interfere with a woman passing by while they are drinking in a rum shop, constructing someone’s house, travelling on a tractor, sitting by the roadside doing nothing, and other interesting methods they use to throw “cat calls” on women. Especially you married men who want to trouble young women, look at the stain of the marital ring left on your finger and reflect on the life you have already established with your wife and kids, your home, before daring to approach a woman and getting her involved in your act of adultery.
I even noticed some very old men who can hardly walk want to make a pass on young teenage girls who are in school and know nothing about life as yet because they are currently going through the different experience and changes in their life, a confusing age of the adolescents. These men you call “cradle snatchers” who want to take away the life of a baby who has not matured as yet. A famous reggae band of today known as Morgan’s Heritage sings a song on that one, it goes,” Leave the young girls them alone, as for a big man your living too naughty. Give them a chance to see their future; do not turn them into a baby mother.” I am sure most of you heard that song playing in the mini buses before or other public places so do not try to ignore it. Women on the whole, everyday are becoming more educated, finishing high school then attending college or university or work and go to school or work in a respectable business until they have the finance to further their education.
All I am trying to say is that men should stop trying to become a distraction in these women lives, constantly troubling the career women while they are just a bunch of men with warped minds and most of all I would have the honour to tell men that not all women you see are call girls, that you could just blow a whistle, then they would come to you and then get hitched. Most women nowadays are trying to save their character and make themselves this refined career woman that portrays many good attributes and qualities and etiquette in order to sustain a righteous personality and also build prestige within themselves and the school or work place to which they are attached.
I know that there are a lot of prostitutes that exist but it is all because they are either lazy to go do a clean day’s job at someone’s home because the money they make is not a large sum or the fact that they are not getting employment from anywhere at all. The thought of this in mind alone tells you that they should stop prostituting themselves because they are degrading women and can spread sexually infectious diseases and tell themselves that they are better and can do better than that. There are male prostitutes as well and they can spread HIV/AIDS too, but can do better than that. As Jesus once said, “If there is no work for you, make work for your own selves.” He is telling us here that there is self employment such as planting vegetables for sale, selling at the market, or even opening your own small business, developing yourself and the community around you at the same time. Some of you women need this advice from me: When you are in a public place and a man hisses at you from far, do not walk towards him. It is clearly telling him that you are a call girl and it even looks like you are a dog responding to the master. Did you women who respond to “cat calls” ever realise this? Well I guess you know better next time when a man blows kisses from you from far do not accept them for a gentleman with courtesy would walk up to you and introduce himself. No man should tell you about your body shape and how the parts look while walking down the road. That is molesting, embarrassing and degrading towards us women. She already knows how her body looks; you don’t have to let her know in public. Men have no right to insult women, while not looking at themselves. As for interfering with women in public places I think being a genuine woman you should contact the nearest police or police station and make a report of the “Cat Call” incident because if you do not this issue will never end. In North America, you are not allowed to make passes on girls in public places; you can get charged for assaulting a woman. Do not make any Guyanese person tell you that this is Guyana, and this is the culture of the Guyanese people because they are wrong and it is not the right thing to do and they will never improve with their uncivilised lifestyle that they have. Make your report to the police; we have to make a great difference for today and tomorrow.
