Gift for Karamat Primary School
THE Mahaicony Humanitarian Organisation, based in New York, United States (U.S.) has donated text books and equipment worth US$10,000 to pupils of Karamat Primary School, at Mora Point, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara.
The gifts were made possible through fund-raising efforts, said Mr. Sradhanand Kublall, who accompanied by his wife and other family members made the presentation on Tuesday, to the Headmistress, Ms. Bahamattie Beharry. The donation included a large quantity of text books, three computers, one refrigerator, two stoves, a sewing machine and a microscope.
An EKG machine was also handed over for the Mora Point Health Centre.
Also in attendance on the occasion were Regional Chairman of Region Five (Mahaica/Berbice), Mr. Harrinarine Baldeo; Regional Education Officer, Mrs. Earlene Crandon; Member of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Mr.B. Bisnauth and Regional Health Officer, Sri Devi Jagjit.
Addressing the gathering of schoolchildren and adult residents of community, Kublall reflected on his experiences while growing up in Mahaicony.
“It was not easy for us. We had many difficulties and I am grateful that I can return and give back to my community,” he said.
He said the computers were part of a family project to usher Mahaicony residents into the age of technology they are confident that the potential if there to achieve great things.
“We hope to establish a computer laboratory in the community soon and we are urging you to ensure that each child is exposed to the training,” Kublall said.
He took the opportunity to extend his gratitude to all members of the donor organisation who were instrumental in the gesture.
Echoing her husband’s sentiments, Mrs. Kublall admitted being ecstatic.
“I grew up here and attended this school and I know what you have to go through, not having enough teachers and books,” she empathised.
Experiences
She said it was her experiences in the area which motivated her to work hard and improve her situation.
“I walked through mud without shoes to attend school and, today, I am enjoying my success. Now I can give back to you,” she said, charging the beneficiaries to make good use of the largess.
Baldeo, expressing his delight at being part of the activity, said it was momentous.
“I am heartened to be here and I am confident that the Ministry of Education is appreciative of the gesture by you, the donors,” he stated.
Baldeo emphasised that the Government of Guyana is supporting the literacy and numeracy drive by the introducing the uniform vouchers and the school feeding programmes.
He said the children of Karamat Primary and community residents should consider themselves fortunate to be recipients of the overseas gifts.
Baldeo, too, admonished the users to take good care of what they received as they move into the technological age.
Crandon tendered her appreciation to the donors and their affiliates abroad, on behalf of the Education Ministry.
She said the act of gifting was commendable.
Beharry offered her profound thanks for contribution and lauded the donors for fulfilling their promises to give back to their community.
“I am overwhelmed and I want to thank you for making the effort to be here. We promise to take good care of the items you have given to us,” she said.
Mora Point is along Mahaicony River 18 kilometres South of the East Coast Demerara Highway.
It also has a nursery school.
