IN commemoration of Amerindian Heritage Month 2010, which opens today, the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs last evening hosted an inter-faith service at the Umana Yana, Kingston. Amerindian Heritage Month, celebrated in September, is being observed under the theme “Promoting Sustainable Livelihood, while Transforming our Village Economies”.
In attendance at the service were, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, Minister of Amerindian Affairs Ms.Pauline Sukhai, and Minister within the Ministry of Health Dr.Berry Ramsarran, among others.
Representatives from different religious factions were invited to offer prayers in celebration of the event.
Prayer readings were conducted by Ms.Alexi La Rose of the Bahai’ Faith, Muslim Brother Musti Neezam, Pandit Brahamarand Prashad of the Hindu faith, Father John Persaud of the Roman catholic faith, and Pastor Onesi La Fleur of the Seventh Day Adventists.
Following the official blessings, the members of the audience were regaled with dances, songs and prayers in several Amerindian dialects, including Wapishana, Makusi and Patamona, by members of Amerindian nations across Guyana.
The launch of Amerindian Heritage Month will be held at the Sophia Exhibition Site, at 16:30h today.
