Over 2000 residents to benefit from improved water supply

-as $70M well station commissioned at De Hoop
MINISTER of Housing and Water, Irfaan Ali on Friday commissioned a new well Station at De Hoop, Mahaica that will benefit over 2000 residents from the area, as well as surrounding communities.

The well station, which costs in excess of $70M, was jointly funded by the government and the Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF) and includes a pump house, discharge pipe and perimeter fence.
Tests were done by the Guyana Water Incorporated’s (GWI) Scientific Services Department which confirmed that the water distributed by the new station meets the World Health Organisation (WHO) standards.

The new station currently produces 192 cubic meters of water per hour and currently serves residents from Frederica Johanna to ‘Handsome Tree’.
GWI is currently undertaking supplementary works to provide service to additional communities within the immediate area of the new well station.
Minister Ali stated that the residents of De Hoop were constantly involved in the project, ensuring that their voices were heard on what should be done, and congratulated them for their enthusiasm and patience.
He highlighted that as a result of the constant monitoring by residents, high quality work was delivered.

Minister Ali also commended the staff of GWI towards their commitment to complete the project on time.
He noted that government has always been concerned about the welfare of citizens, and profits are not considered in major projects like these.
“We stand committed in ensuring that this service is expanded, because we are going to make the incremental investment that will ensure all the people in this area benefit and to ensure that investment remains sustainable,” Minister Ali emphasised.
He said the major component of delivering water to residents is the energy that has to be used, which is subsidized by government.
The long-term goal is to improve quality while ensuring that the product remains affordable to all.
He noted that lots of companies have been producing bottled water that is sold in the markets at high prices, and profits are being made.
However, it is the Ministry’s responsibility to ensure that this product is not over priced at the market, so GWI will soon be introducing its own branded bottled water on the market, the Minister noted.

This will ensure that persons receive good quality bottled water at an affordable price and will generate revenue to accelerate capital investments.
Regional Chairman of Region Five, Harrinarine Baldeo noted that there have been tremendous improvements in the water supply in the Region, as a result of the government’s, as well as GWI’s commitment to enhance the lives of residents.
He noted that the project will make a positive difference in the lives of residents, as the well will be able to serve over 500 households.
Project Development Manager, GWI, Carlos Rodrigues said that the water is a fundamental resource and should be used with care.
He urged residents to care the facility, as well as the available water, so that future generations can also benefit.
Chief Executive, GWI, Yuri Chandisingh said that the new well station will allow unlimited availability of water.
“We are greatly honoured to serve the residents of the Region,” he noted.

Region Five has, over the years, benefited from the government’s investment in the water sector, as over $600M were spent to improve water supply in various areas of the Region.
