BIG upsets were recorded in the annual Guyana National Dominoes Federation (GNDF)-organised Supligen-sponsored countrywide dominoes tournament that got under way on Monday night at the New Spot Seven, Freeman Street, East La Penitence. Zone One hot favourites, Specialist, were booted out without having to play the final sitting against newcomers Go Getters and Lightning Reflection Bar while Mean Machine and R&R ‘B’ knocked out Ministry of Health and Turning Point, and Beacons got the upper hand over Rage.
Each zone comprises nine teams playing on a two-in, one-out basis until the finals where one team will head to the playoffs that will be held on September 10 & 11 at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
Zone Two started last evening at F&H/Strikers Sports Club in Meadow Brook Gardens featuring Golden Stars, Impressors, Meadow Brook Warriors, F.I.B, Brazil, Mambo Bar, Blue Bird ‘A’, Titans and F&H Supremes.
Zone Three starts today at Transport Sports Club, Thomas Lands, with the likes of Rangers, Arsenal, Guyana Fire Service, Mix Up, Blue Birds ‘B’, Next Level, Trouble Shooters, Exodus and R&R ‘A’.
Zone Four will start next week at Turning Point Sports Club, Tucville, featuring Strikers, Turning Point ‘A’ and other teams.
Prizes for the competition are: first, $200 000, one case of Supligen and a trophy; second, $125 000, one case of Supligen and trophy; third, $100 000, one case of Supligen and trophy. The MVP will take home $10 000 and six tins of Supligen. Zone winners will be given $10 000 and six tins of Supligen.
