Three new primary schools in Region Three, Essequibo Islands/West Demerara, will be opened in the housing schemes at Belle West, Parfaite Harmonie, and Tuschen on the East Bank of Essequibo, and will see students from those areas attending them come September.
These schools are being constructed at a cost of $49.2M, $59.3M and $68M, respectively. And according to Region Three Vice Chairman, Manpersaud, the Regional Administration is in the process of procuring furniture for the schools, to the tune of $12M.
Acting Chief Education Officer, Primary, Fhariman Ali, said the schools are C graded which indicate that just over 100 students will attend each of them. She said that the schools are in the housing schemes due to the large number of residents in these communities, and is in keeping with the Education Ministry’s policy of education being accessible within proximity of a child’s home.
Meanwhile, the Region Three Vice Chairman said that the other schools in the district slated for rehabilitation are more than 60 percent completed. He noted that the region is constantly monitoring the progress to ensure that the schools are completed by the start of the new school term.
Under the Region’s capital works programme for 2010, about 10 schools were slated for rehabilitation. The Vice Chairman indicated that works to the Kawall Primary School at Canal No.2 have since been completed. (GINA)
