-nominated to national society of high school scholars
SIXTEEN-year-old Angelina Maria Browne kept Guyana’s flag flying high in the United States of America when she graduated in May 2010 as one of the Most Outstanding Students of the People’s Baptist Academy in Georgia and earned herself national recognition. Daughter of Bishop Henry E. Browne and wife Pastor Donna Browne of New Life Ministries, in Lance Gibbs Street, Georgetown, Angelina’s achievement gained her an invitation by Mr. Claes Noble to join the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS). Mr. Noble, a senior member of the family that established the world-renowned Nobel Prizes, is Chairman of the NSHSS.
In his letter of invitation to Angelina, Mr. Nobel said, “Based on your outstanding academic achievement at the People’s Baptist Academy, you have been nominated for membership in The National Society of High School Scholars. Your hard work has placed you among a select group of students and has earned you this invitation to join other outstanding high school scholars in recognition of dedication and excellence.”
Membership to the NSHSS is by invitation only and is reserved for those who have demonstrated ‘superior academic excellence’, according to a Press Release from the Society dated May 5th. Angelina will be inducted into the Society in a matter of weeks at the annual recognition ceremony to be held at the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta.
Four years ago, Angelina migrated to the USA where she attended the Baptist Academy, an almost all-white private school accredited by the Georgia Private School Accreditation Council. She was the only Guyanese attending the school. “At first I felt alone but afterwards I made a few friends,” she said, thanking her father and her mother for the support they have given her.
“With God all things are possible. When you put Him first and you study hard, the rest will automatically follow,” she stated. Angelina is back home in Guyana enjoying her holidays before returning to Georgia where she will pursue medicine at a university in Georgia.
