Autopsy confirms victim died of smoke inhalation

Canal Polder fire…
A POST mortem examination, performed yesterday on the remains of Bibi Saquknena Latif, who perished in a fire at her Lot 22 Debuff, Canal Number Two Polder, West Bank Demerara home earlier this week, confirmed that she died of smoke inhalation.
Dr. Nehaul Singh gave the autopsy report on what was found in the debris after the Tuesday, July 20 blaze.
The woman, 62, was trapped in the heavily grilled house where she lived alone and, usually, slept in the lower flat of the two-storey, where she also had a rum shop business.
While it is suspected that the conflagration was electrically started in a room where alcohol was stored, investigations into its origin are continuing.
Neighbours had formed a bucket brigade but only succeeded in saving the two buildings on either side of the burnt structure, one of which was scorched.
The Guyana Fire Service responded to the alarm with a tender but only had to douse the embers.
