Central Demerara Lions Club elects first female president

THE Lions Club of Central Demerara has elected its first female president in the organisation’s 42-year history.
Lion Sharon Letlow and other executive members were installed at a special ceremony at the club’s den at New Providence, East Bank Demerara.
Vice-Governor Lion Surojpaul Singh delivered the charge to the 2010-2011 Board of Directors who were installed by Chairman of the Council of Governors Lion Ivor English.
“Empowering Communities Through Service” is the theme of the new president who sees the need to examine the type of service offered to the communities. She noted that “The services we give to the communities must be sustainable. More emphasis must be placed on our youth. We need to teach then life skills which they will take with them through to adulthood. We need to help our youth to grow and be well rounded citizens”. This goal, she plans to achieve through networking with other organizations.
Letlow also sees the need for growth in quality membership of her club and plans to work towards fostering stronger fellowship among members. She pledged with her executive to “keep the flag of central Demerara flying high and promise that you will hear greater things about the club during this fiscal year”.
The other members of the board are: 1st Vice President Desmond Woon, 2nd Vice President Pauline Massy, Secretary Wellesley Davis, Treasurer Dwarka Singh, Tamer Oswald Thierens, Twister Cecil Persaud and Membership Director Chetram Singh.
The Club which is based at New Providence was chartered on the 5 February 1968.
