THE PLANTATION system, so much a part of the Region’s and Guyana’s political, social and economic struggles, has indeed come a very long way.
Synonymous with the brutality of slavery, and later with the iniquitous indentureship, this system has since known nothing but struggle for human decency and improved working conditions for all those who contribute to its significant economic contribution to this nation.
Hence, Guyana’s sugar workers have had a history of militant struggle for better working conditions, highlighted particularly by the incident of the Enmore Martyrs in June, 1948.
Thanks to the late, revered leader of the PPP/C, and former president of the Republic of Guyana, Dr. Cheddi Jagan, that tireless fighter, whose political struggles have been synonymous with those of the local sugar workers.
Therefore, last Friday’s ceremony at the International Conference to honour the industry’s champion workers for 2009 is indicative of the Government’s recognition of the crucial role that this category of hardworking Guyanese working class citizens plays in the productive process of this all important industry, and of their contribution to the nation’s GDP.
Of course, there have been differences between the government and the sugar workers; but such has not blurred the former’s appreciation of this working class group’s dedication and loyalty.
Truly, this particular sector’s workers do deserve their accolades for their continuous toil, despite the challenges. WELL DONE CHAMPIONS!
Job well done!
