Two-week celebration to commemorate 170th Buxton anniversary

BUXTON/FRIENDSHIP 170th Anniversary Committee has announced a two weeks programme of activities to commemorate the purchase of Buxton, East Coast Demerara.

The celebrations, from July 24 to August 8, is themed ‘Celebrating our heritage, charting a new development path.’

The announcement said at least 100 overseas based Buxtonians are returning home, especially for the extravaganza, which starts with an opening ceremony at Friendship Primary School on Saturday, July 24, at 19:00 h.

Other happenings, up to August 1, includes a day of sports, a grand variety concert, a two-day health fair, an arts fair and exhibition, excursions to East Berbice and  Baganara Resort, an outreach to the elderly and a libation jamboree.

A major celebratory element will be a grand inter-faith religious service at Arundel Congregational Church, on Sunday, August 1, beginning at 07:30 h.

The day before is the annual campfire at Railway Line Market Square after a grand ball, a  block party, assistance to the elderly and needy, volunteer assistance to selected homes, a school essay competition, a day for children, mobile music and tramping and a blue and white party.

The farewell dance is on August 8 in the night, preceded by the Reunion Day of Sports in which neighbouring villages of Vigilance and Annandale have been invited to participate.
