Over 1,800 residents to benefit from new Cornelia Ida well

Through investments in the development of infrastructure in the water sector, Government is expanding the access of potable water countrywide, to ensure citizens have adequate access to and consume safe water.
Speaking at the official commissioning of the Cornelia Ida well West Coast Demerara, Region Three, Minister of Housing and Water, Irfaan Ali, boasted of the many developments in the water sector in the region.
“We have now completed the Vergenoegen treatment facility, and the Tuschen well is also in its final stage. We also have the wells at Parfaite Harmonie and Cornelia Ida and works have been ongoing to upgrade network and distribution systems in many communities.”
Also in attendance at this ceremony were Region Three Chairman Julius Faerber, Director Capital Investment and Planning Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) Ramchand Jailall, and Chairman of GWI Board and Private Sector Commission Ramesh Dookhoo.

Ali observed that the establishment of the well in Cornelia Ida, which will be providing water to other communities, including Hague Backdam, was a direct result of Cabinet’s interactions with residents.
Minister Ali stated that the well was necessary, since the capacity before this well could not have catered for residents of Hague Backdam and surrounding housing schemes.
“Another important aspect of our development work in this region is the interconnection of infrastructure to ensure that we have continuity and we can balance the demand and supply as against infrastructure,” Minister Ali said.

Faerber stated that Government has been improving all the sectors in the region. He noted that this new facility will increase the flow of water to many homes. Faerber urged residents to monitor the performance of the well so that water utilised is managed effectively.
Dookhoo highlighted that GWI will continue to work to improve the supply of water to all Guyanese. He explained that staff will continue to gather complaints from residents and implement measures to correct them.
He encouraged residents to care the facility, since it is a vital asset and finding maintenance capital for remedial works is a challenge.
The new well station costs in excess of $47M and produces 68 cubic meters of water per hour, with the capacity to serve over 1,800 residents. (GINA)
