Shot miner identified

ONE of the two men shot dead at Mousie Landing on Sunday last, previously identified as Devon Courtman, was yesterday positively identified as Devon Williams, aged 19,  of Aruka,  Mainstay/Whyaka, Essequibo. Last night Judith Baird, the mother of the dead youth, said she learnt of his death yesterday afternoon based on a photograph which had been circulating on the internet.
Speaking from her home at Aruka, she said the teenager had been the third of her ten children and that he had left home for the hinterland close to two years ago.
She had not heard of him since then until late yesterday afternoon, when she received news of his death.  She will be travelling, accompanied by relatives, to take charge of the body after a post-mortem examination, which has been scheduled to be performed on the body of the miner today.
Williams was one of two men who died during a shootout between armed bandits and miners at Mousie Landing, Konwaruk Region 8 (Potaro/Siparuni) on Sunday morning last.
The Brazilian wife of the dead man was also yesterday in Georgetown.
She said yesterday that the deceased youth had been an honest and hardworking porkknocker and had not been  the owner of a firearm.
She repeated her belief that he had been robbed and then murdered.
The other man who died was earlier identified as Oswald Bourne, one of two suspected bandits.
Another man, also a suspected bandit,  who had reportedly been injured in the exchange of gunfire, was up to last night still at large.
The Police investigations are continuing.
