KIDNAPPED boat builder Fabian Gonsalves, 42, of Hampton Court, Essequibo, returned home unharmed yesterday.
Police said he reported to the Anna Regina Police Station accompanied by his wife Philomena Gonsalves around 09:15h. Gonsalves, kidnapped by three gunmen on June 3 from his mother-in-law’s home at Jacklow, Upper Pomeroon, said he was taken aboard a trawler moored in the Atlantic Ocean.
He told police he was kept in a locked cabin under guard by two gunmen and after about a week, two others went on to the vessel and after scrutinising him, one remarked “this is not the man we want”.
Gonsalves said he was kept on the vessel until Sunday when he was taken aboard another boat and dumped on Tiger Beach in the Waini district.
He was eventually rescued by a fishing crew of four men and managed to reach Paradise Jib on the Essequibo Coast, from where he travelled to his home at Hampton Court.
Gonsalves told police he was not ill treated at any time nor was any ransom demanded during the incident.
The boat builder, also known as Vampa, was reunited with his family at their home last evening in good health.
His wife was critical of reporters from the Guyana Times and the Kaieteur News who were at the police station and said the family did not want the media covering the story. Some sections of the media had claimed that the family had paid a ransom for his release but the family denied this.
After his abduction, relatives and friends led a search along the Essequibo Coast and the Pomeroon without success.
The kidnapping left the Pomeroon community in a state of shock and fear.
