THE Guyana Amateur Boxing Association’s (GABA) National Intermediate Championships box off this evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall with 15 fights in eight weight divisions beginning at 18:00 h. Defending champions Guyana Defence Force will be looking to maintain their stronghold in the amateur category, but will be pressed by the Republicans and Forgotten Youth Foundation gyms which have been producing some talented boxers over recent years.
The weigh-in of the competitors was scheduled for yesterday at the National Gymnasium and pugilists from 10 gyms around the country are expected to be a part of this tournament which is expected to attract large spectator support.
The gyms that will be represented are: Forgotten Youth Foundation, Guyana Defence Force, Republican, Harpy Eagles, Port Kaituma, Essequibo, Pocket Rockets, Timehri Warriors, Police and Bauxite Bombers.
According to a source close to the GABA, over 40 boxers will contest the tournament which is scheduled to conclude on Sunday at the same venue.
Among the young boxers who will be on show are the recently crowned Novices champions including Republican’s lightweight fighter Nandkumar Singh, GDF’s featherweight and flyweight in Clairmont Gibson and Edwin Richards respectively, Police’s middleweight Jermaine Dow and Forgotten Youth Foundation’s featherweight fighter Michael Jordon.
All five boxers won the national Novices title in their respective weight categories and will be looking to add the national intermediate title to their names.
