GTTA hopes to utilise new equipment at Independence tourney

THE Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) is hoping to enhance its annual independence observance, the Independence Table Tennis Tournament, by pressing for the availability of its newly acquired equipment for use at the event. National Table Tennis coach Linden Johnson said that they signed a three-year contract with the Stag International Table Tennis Equipment Manufacturer in 2008 after they bought 25 training tables. The purpose of the contract which stipulates that the GTTA is to receive a quantity of equipment is to promote the Stag brand name in the region, Johnson explained.
He also mentioned in an evidently anxious manner that it is the hope of the association to utilise this equipment at the upcoming national tournament, “we want to clear the equipment off the wharf by this weekend so we can use it for the tournament,” he said.
The equipment will come in most handy for this year’s segment of the tournament as Johnson revealed that the influx of competitors is expected to be very favourable since players from Linden, Essequibo and Berbice will join their Georgetown compatriots.
The India-based table tennis equipment manufacturer delivered on its agreement with the GTTA by supplying 10 competition tables, 120 barriers, 10 nets, 10 scoring tables, 10 scorecards and a quantity of balls – which Johnson indicated as the equipment that was sent to the local association.
This year’s GTTA/ National Sports Commission-sponsored Independence Table Tennis tournament will get off to a running start on June 4, with competition in the 8 years and under and the 10 years and under categories.
