A taxi driver was yesterday remanded to prison on a rape charge.
Orville Alistair, 41, of 661 Field 8 South Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson and was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which stated that on May 3, he had carnal knowledge of a female against her will.
Attorney-at-law Ms. Sasha Roberts represented the accused and informed the court that her client knows nothing about the charge. She said when the time comes her client is willing to defend himself.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford objected to bail, and stated that the accused took the virtual complainant to a guest house and had sexual intercourse with her, without her consent.
Telford informed the court that the accused has another matter of similar nature in the court.
He stated that women must be protected from sexual predators.
The accused was remanded to prison and the matter was transferred to another court for June 11.
