Jailed thief prefers sentence than being on remand

PHILBERT Cush, who admitted several previous convictions, was sentenced to one year imprisonment, on Monday, by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo.
He pleaded guilty to simple larceny at New Amsterdam Court, in Berbice, but protested that,
while he stole from Raphael Jonas, he did not take all that was listed in the charge.
Cush (no address given) asked for a light sentence, declaring that he cannot stand being on remand because that period of incarceration is indefinite.
Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting, said, last May 2, the virtual complainant, a vendor in Pitt Street, New Amsterdam, secured his stall and went home to Fyrish, Corentyne.
However, on his return the following day, he found that his business premises had been broken into and seven pairs of short pants, seven jerseys, 10 pairs of long pants, a hat and four bandannas, with a total value of $94,200, were missing.
