Shot robbery defendant granted $100,000 bail

A SUSPECT, who was shot and wounded after he, allegedly, robbed another man, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday, accused of robbery with aggravation. Fitzroy Gibson, 27, of Lot 72 Sandy Babb Street, Kitty, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the March 19 offence, particulars of which said he was together with another when he committed the $50,000 cash robbery on Bhoog Maraj.
Defence Counsel Vic Puran, in application for reasonable bail, claimed that Police shot Gibson, a fruit vendor, in his back.
The lawyer said no identification parade was held and, therefore, the virtual complainant does not know who the defendant is.
However, Maraj, who was present in Court, maintained it was Gibson who attacked him as he was entering his motor car and demanded a gun.
Maraj said he had no firearm in his possession but the defendant took away the money and he and his companion escaped in a minibus.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, informed that an eyewitness saw what happened and identified Gibson as the robber.
The Prosecutor said Gibson was about to be arrested when he armed himself with a cutlass and was hit by Police gunfire.
Gibson was put on $100,000 bail and the case was transferred to another Court for June 15.
