HEAD of the Presidential Secretariat and Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon said Cabinet has been advised by Prime Minister Samuel Hinds that he has Chaired the first meeting of the Proprietary Committee established to plan and execute the state’s obligations under the UNASUR treaty that would transfer its presidency from Ecuador to Guyana in 2010.
The meeting also addressed planning for Guyana’s stewardship over the following or the subsequent year.
He noted that the ambit of the Proprietary Committee, specifically with regards to the transfer of the presidency, was to design a range of activities that would recognise August 2010 as the date for the actual transfer of the summit.
“With Guyana’s accession to the presidency would come functions, duties and obligations all laid out, all reflected in the provisions in the treaty that establish UNASUR,” the HPS said.
UNASUR, an intergovernmental union integrating two existing customs unions – MERCOSUR (Common Market of the South) and the Andean Community of Nations, was established on May 23, 2008 when Constitutive Treaty was signed by the presidents of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela, during the third Summit of Heads of State in Brasilia, Brazil.
UNASUR is aimed at promoting integration among South American countries.
