M&CC seeking to build health care workers capacity
THE Mayor and City Council (M&CC) of Georgetown, is, this year, seeking to assist with building the capacity of health care workers in the areas of voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) and prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV, a release said.
The release said other areas of capacity building will include home based care, maternal and child health and chronic illnesses.
“The Council is working to assist with the provision of 95 per cent immunisation coverage for infants,” it added.
The release said nurses functioning at City health centres are dedicated to their task and the Georgetown Municipality will assist in what way they can.
Additionally, the M&CC saluted nurses and midwifes in acknowledgement of their continued efforts, in spite of harsh working conditions, to provide quality service to the general citizenry.
The statement acknowledged that the nursing profession is, perhaps, one of the most unsung services provided.
“Many citizens do not know the extent to which this service has been assisting mothers in different local communities,” it said.
It also noted that the health centres are community based and, therefore, reduce the gap between health care and the residents, who can participate in the processes involved in the provision.
The statement concluded that nurses are key to this service as they provide pre-natal, post-natal care and family planning guidance, among other services, at the municipal health centres, Dorothy Bailey, Festival City, Albouystown and Queenstown.
