The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, on behalf of the Palms, Brickdam, yesterday received a 50 inch High Definition Television and kitchen utensils from the United States Embassy to help improve the quality of life of senior citizens at the institution.
The television will afford residents at the Palms the opportunity to occupy their recreational time more rewardingly. This will also make them aware of issues around the country and the world.
The television will be housed in a recreational facility that was recently constructed by government. The facility will, at a later stage, cater for the establishment of a library, canteen and exercise rooms.
Three million dollars was allocated in the 2010 Budget for the procurement of exercise equipment for the facility.
Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, Trevor Thomas, expressed his gratitude to the U.S Embassy for its thoughtfulness and promised to ensure that the residents of the Palms make full use of the equipment.
Captain of the United States Air Force, Brook Elkins, who handed over the items, stated that the United States will be continuing its efforts to upgrade the Palms.
Elkins added that he is looking forward to the continued partnership between the Human Services Ministry and the U.S Embassy.
Administrator of the Palms, Govind Singh, said the donation will help improve the social life of the residents.
Government has contributed over $10 M tothe enhancement of the Palms to make residents more comfortable, and an industrial washer, a mini bus and other equipment will be purchased shortly to further enhance the quality of life of senior citizens there.
