BBC/GABA/MCYS Pro Am Fights
FISTIC fury is anticipated by boxing fans who will throng the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) tonight, when the third stanza of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC)/Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport-organised ProAm Fights, gets under way from 20:00 h. In the feature bout, debutant Theophilus ‘Blue’ King will match gloves with the repeated ‘Prodigal Son’ and journeyman of local boxing, Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes, with the latter vowing to knock his opponent out in the second round.
Gilkes has an unflattering tale-of-the-tape with four wins from 18 fights against 11 losses, nine of which came via knockout and whether he gets loss number 12 or win number five is up to him, as certainly King is looking to etch his name in the minds of boxing pundits locally.
In a female catch weight bout, Sharon ‘Stone’ Ward, who has four wins and four losses in her eight fights, will be going up against the audacious Pauline London, who has lost more fights than she has won, but no doubt would be looking to add a victory to her record having earlier bragged that she was going to beat Ward.
Michael De Mattos has been out of action for a while and whether he will be ring rusty or not is left to be seen when he faces Laurex Benn in the opening bout on the professional card, which is a junior-middleweight contest.
Kwesi Jones and James Walcott close off the professional card for the night which will see all bouts being four-round contests, when they meet as junior-welterweights, in what can be called a battle for supremacy.
On the amateur side of things, Akeem Alexander and David Thomas will set things off in their junior-flyweight battle, while Natasha Ashby and Amanda Norville will compete in a female lightweight contest.
Claymont Gibson and Nankumar Singh will match gloves in a junior-welterweight scrap and to cap things off, a battle for supremacy will be on when Romeo Norville and Trelon Moore meet in the heavyweight division, after which Courts Guyana Limited will present all the amateur pugilists with hampers.
As occurred with the previous two ProAm Fight cards, National Communications Network (NCN) will bring live broadcast of the night’s proceedings which, according to a source from the GBBC but not yet confirmed, some of the cricketers now in Guyana for the ICC Twenty20 World Cup, are expected to attend.
