TAPAKUMA Village Council, headed by Toshoa, Ms. Doreen Jackobus,
has embarked on a project to develop a tourist destination there.
A release said there are six historical sites in the community, including the beautiful fresh water Tapakuma Lake, the largest in Region Two (Pomeroon/ Supenaam).
The release said areas which had a Police station, a 100 feet pull-over ramp, a public trail opened in 1957 and a gallery from which to view the waterway will be developed and properly identified.
Former parliamentarian, Mr. Ishack Basir, who is involved in the project, said, when the three miles high point dam, from Red Lock, is repaired, it will give tourists an opportunity to gaze upon miles of open savannah.
He said another historical site is the Dawa Pump Station, which was built in 1961 by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Government in the middle of the Tapakuma Lake and is a magnificent display of engineering skills.
Basir said aquaculture, bird watching, herbal plants and sailing are also included in the development plan.
Residents of the community, located 15 miles West of Anna Regina and bordering Mainstay/Whyaka, also on Essequibo Coast, produces wood, logs, sawn lumber and handicraft.
Tapakuma farmers also cultivate pineapple and cassava organically.
