April Criminal Sessions in Demerara open

THE April Criminal Sessions in Demerara were opened yesterday with the traditional ceremonial parade on South Road, in front of the Supreme Court, Georgetown. Two judges – Justice William Ramlal and Justice Roxanne George – are assigned to the sessions and are expected to cope with over 126 cases listed for trial.
At the Jail Delivery declared to the court at the close of the January Sessions last Saturday, the report by Senior Supt. of Prisons, Mr. T. Small, showed that 126 prisoners are at the Georgetown Prisons awaiting trial.
Ninety-three on the list are for murder (including 7 females).  The rest are attempted murder – 4, manslaughter – 4, carnal knowledge -20, incest -2, armed robbery -1, and rape – 2.
Justice George, who inspected the Guard of Honour arranged for the occasion, took the salute during the March Past.
