ACTING Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday fined Roy Vieira, 42, $25,000 with the alternative of nine months imprisonment for shoplifting. The shoplifter, of Lot 125 Waterloo Street, pleaded guilty to the larceny of a bottle of red wine, priced at $4,147, from Bounty Supermarket, on Water Street, also in Georgetown, earlier in the day.
Vieira, who claimed to be a porkknocker, put the booty in his pocket with a hole and it reached the bottom of his close fitting pants but he was caught on camera and security guard Stevanson Mentore apprehended him.
“I have a lungs problem. And I heard red wine good for the heart. The doctor told me that my heart would function better with it,” he told the Court.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, said Vieira is not a first offender and had stolen wine from the same place in a similar way but managed to escape.
This time, however, Mentore saw the bottle in Vieira’s possession before he left the shop.
