MICHAEL Azeez, 20, of Lot 5 Strand, New Amsterdam, Berbice, who is charged with having carnal knowledge will marry the minor virtual complainant, who is pregnant with his child. His lawyer, Mr. Charrandas Persaud gave the undertaking when the defendant appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at New Amsterdam Court, on Tuesday.
Defence Counsel told the Court that Azeez was not just having an affair but is in love with the teenage virtual complainant.
“Your Worship, the complainant will be 16 years old on Friday and, thereafter, she will become my client’s wife. He loves her. He has not flaunted himself with every passing woman.  It’s just she he loves,” the lawyer maintained.
The allegation against Azeez is that he committed the offence on February 14, 2009, at Strand, New Amsterdam, with a girl under the age of 16 years.
Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting, asked that substantial bail be set, based on the nature, gravity and prevalence of the crime and the magistrate ordered that Azeez post $90,000 surety and be back in Court on May 10.
