Alleged jewel snatcher granted but cannot afford bail

SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD Godfrey Gittens, of Lot 191 Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown, has been charged with jewel larceny.
He appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday and pleaded not guilty to having, on April 12, stolen a gold chain valued $300,000 from Penny Richard.

Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, objected to the grant for the defendant, pointing out that the chain was not recovered but the defendant was granted $75,000 bail until April 19.
However, Gittens, tearfully, lamented that he could not afford the sum.
The Prosecutor said the virtual complainant, a foreigner, was sitting in the back seat of her vehicle, with the window open, when the chain was snatched.
The woman showed the Court scratches on her neck and said the thief was apprehended by public-spirited citizens who heard her loud screams.
