Underdogs reach UG Inter-faculty cricket semifinals

UNDERDOGS Faculty of Health Sciences/School of Education and Humanities and the University of Guyana Berbice Campus are the Group A qualifiers to the semi-finals of the University of Guyana (UG) Inter-Faculty Twenty20 cricket tournament currently being played at the UG ground. In a valiant display at the Albion Community Development Ground last Friday, Berbice Campus staved off the challenges of both the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry and the Faculty of Health Sciences/Education to qualify at the head of the group.
The first match of the day was a low-scoring affair which saw Faculty of Agriculture reduce the Berbice Campus to 107 runs in 15 overs thanks to spirited spells of bowling by Orison Sealy and Tyrone English both of whom ended with figures of 2-18 from 3 overs.
Tosho Forrester with a patient knock of 22 and Kaylan Etwaroo who scored 19 put up the only resistance for the Berbice Campus side, who reduced their opponents to 96 in reply.
English returned with the bat to hammer a quick-fire 20 while Seon Richardson contributed 19 against the bowling of Collin Bynoe and Michael Rengasami who picked up two wickets each for 23 and 26 runs respectively, sending the Faculty of Agriculture out of the tournament with a second defeat, after they were upset by the Faculty of Health Sciences the previous day.
Later in the afternoon, the Berbice Campus returned to demolish Health Sciences scoring 145 without loss from 15 overs, of which Forrester clobbered 79 runs. Health Sciences/Education in reply were bowled out for a meagre 118 runs.
Heavyweights Faculties of Technology, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Staff were all scrapping for semifinal berths yesterday and with each of the teams boasting a win and a loss to their name, they find themselves in a must-win situation to qualify.
In the first encounter, Social Sciences, captained by in-form Guyana Defence Force (GDF) batsman Marcus Watkins, and boasting ex-West Indies speedster Colin Stuart, faced up against Technology, spearheaded by skipper Jermaine Reynolds and past Under-15 nationals Dane Benny and Rabindranauth Ramkellawan.
In the second match Natural Sciences were down to face Staff and certainly Natural Sciences, who have within their lineup Georgetown Cricket Club’s  first division players, Treon Forde and Wasin Haslim leading their charge, should start as favourites.
Team Staff surprised the powerful Social Scientists who embarrassingly shrunk to 76 for 7 in 20 overs last Thursday. They will have in their lineup past youth national Raymond Singh and the hard-hitting left-hand spinner Damion Van Tull.
The final is scheduled for Thursday at the same venue at a time to be announced.
