DYSLEXIA – how it affects your child’s life?

Children are such a joy to watch as they go about in their innocent playful ways reciting poems or doing phonics. These little people are so adorable in advertisements or movies where they mime adults. But some kids may not be as sharp or they may take a longer expected time to start talking. Some toddlers may have a problem with rhyming, reading or following directions with many step by step procedures. If you observe such occurences you may want to ask a pediatrician if your child is dyslexic.
Dyslexia, an almost unheard of topic in the past is a “must know” today for every responsible parent who would like their child to succeed in life. Although it is totally normal for some seven year old to spell backwards or have difficulty sounding words, dyslexic kids may experience a longer episode of this condition.
Dyslexia is a medical condition the where the child’s brain cannot sort out certain information like letters or words and in some cases cannot remember the spoken or written words. The comparative diagram below shows the brain of an normal person versus a dyslexic person and highlights the areas responsible for word articulation.
A dyslexic child does not have a problem with the senses of hearing and vision. Even if an IQ test (intelligent quotient test) is done you will see that the dyslexic child may come out with high ranking marks. These are the findings that a doctor may look for to confirm his or her diagnosis of the condition. So the child who is suffering from dyslexia has comparable abilities to a normal child. If it is recognised early then there are tools that you can use to alleviate the response such as phonics or reading under guidance and feedback.
However if dyslexia is not addressed early it can impact negatively on the adult life in aspects such as health, career and family since it all boils down to education and reading.

NOTE THAT NO MEDICATION OR COUNSELLING ARE REQUIRED TO FIX DYSLEXIA.
The core treatment involves specialised attention from a collection of persons. In more resourceful countries specially trained teachers and school counsellors may be included to giude an individualised program for that child. How many parents actually understand dyslexia and their role in this condition? If you are reading this article then you should share this information in a kind and sensitive manner with key persons especially teachers who can make an impact in the lives of such persons. However, it is imperative that a team approach be the strategy to address this problem where the parent or guardian takes the lead. If you are a parent or guardian of such a child you should insisit on making an extra effort to provide the required intervention from a team of parent, teacher and if possible the pediatrician where supervised reading sessions can be the focus.
Before venturing out to problem solving in Guyana we first have to get stats of the incidents. If we think that it is worth the while an innovative pilot program could be designed and implemented on a small scale to ascertain the findings. Such critical issues can only be fixed when a direct and practical approach is taken.
Dyslexic or not better reading and analytical skills translates to better decisions making which in turn implies better careers and a better life. We can improve our country one life at a time.
