Serving in her second year as Deputy Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba, on her first visit to Guyana, met President Bharrat Jagdeo at State House Thursday A native of Botswana, the official was accompanied by Director of the Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) Caribbean Centre, Henry Charles. The meeting focused on follow-ups to collaborative initiatives between the Guyana Government and the Commonwealth.
In an interview with the Government Information Agency, the Deputy Secretary General gave credence to Guyana for being the host country for the CYP, and the key role of President Jagdeo at the Heads of Government level.
Among these roles is the ambitious call for international financial institution reform and his role in the fight against climate change at the Copenhagen Summit late last year.
In the meeting with the President, Masire-Mwamba said she used the occasion to highlight some of the various undertakings of the Commonwealth.
Coming from a country that is developing, like Guyana, she said Botswana is climatically hot, but from a development standpoint, she will leave with an ‘impressive impression’ of the country.
“We have a lot of Guyanese in Botswana in the education field in particular; but also from the health challenges point of view Botswana, has pioneered a lot of work in the HIV/AIDS area and I think Guyana has also looked at some of the models used in that area,” the Deputy Secretary General said.(GINA)
