BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) – Both local teams contesting the English Counties Pro 40 competition slumped to defeats on Tuesday.
Derbyshire stopped a Barbados Select XI by six wickets, and Yorkshire stumped the University of the West Indies by 52 runs.
At the Brewery, the Barbados Select XI failed to defend a victory target of 202, as Derbyshire won with six balls to spare.
The Barbadians, sent in to bat, were dismissed for 201 in 38.2 overs – Jonathan Carter hit the top score of 42, fellow national batsman Rashidi Boucher supported with 39, and Young West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder made 38.
Ian Hunter was the most successful Derbyshire bowler with three for 33, while Greg Smith and Anguilla’s Chesney Hughes collected two wickets apiece.
Paul Borrington then struck nine fours and one six in an unbeaten 98 from 116 balls, and Chesney Hughes scored 48 to lead Derbyshire to 202 for four from 39 overs.
National off-spinner Ashley Nurse and Young West Indies spinner Jomel Warrican snared two wickets each.
At Foursquare Oval, a useful all-round performance from Windward Islands all-rounder Liam Sebastien failed to spare UWI from a 52-run defeat at the hands of Yorkshire.
Chasing 244 for victory from their 40 overs, UWI were restricted to 191 for seven with West Indies opener Omar Phillips leading the way with 49.
Barbados off-spinner Ryan Wiggins scored 43, Raymond Reifer, a nephew of long-standing Barbadian batsman Floyd Reifer, made 30, and Sebastien was not out on 22.
Earlier, Gary Ballance collected six fours and two sixes in 94 from 91 balls, and Adam Lyth was not out on 70 from 87 balls, as Yorkshire were dismissed for 243 in 40 overs.
Sebastien was the pick of the UWI bowlers with three for 34.
In the other match, Billy Godleman struck seven fours and five sixes in 118 from 99 balls to set Essex up for an 84-run victory over Lancashire at the Three Ws Oval.
