Taxi driver remanded on break and enter, larceny charge

A taxi driver was yesterday remanded to prison on a break and enter and larceny charge. Dave Courtney Evans, (no address given) appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson and pleaded not guilty to the charge, which stated that on February 24, he broke and entered the store of Suresh Sookwah and stole 19 bottles of perfume valued $185,000, a quantity of male and female clothing valued $1.3M , and other items totaling $1.6M.
Defence Counsel Mr. Frank Fraser represented the defendant and requested for reasonable bail. He stated that his client was told to go at a house and collect the items. He said his client was not aware that the items were stolen.
The virtual complainant, who was present in court, stated that his neighbours saw the defendant along with two other men loading the items into a car. He said the matter was reported and the vehicle number was given to the police.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, objected to bail and stated that after the defendant was apprehended he was cautioned about the offence and he admitted that he, along with his brother and another person, broke into the store.
The prosecutor said nothing was recovered and requested that the matter be transferred to the Providence court.
Evans was remanded to prison and the matter was transferred to the Providence court for March 29.
