MICKEL Dwight, 29, of Lot 35 Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday, charged with larceny of mangoes.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge, denying that, on March 12, he stole a bag containing the fruits, valued $7,000, property of Felix Thurman.
The defendant, who does work for market stallholders, claimed the virtual complainant gave him the bag to take to his stall and he did so.
Dwight said he has been doing such work for ten years and was never involved in any problem.
But after he made the delivery, Thurman, hours later, accused him of not having done so, Dwight told the Court.
However, Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, maintained that the defendant did not deliver the bag and, when the virtual complainant confronted him, he ran away but was, subsequently, arrested.
Dwight was put on $10,000 bail until April 13.
