LAST Friday, the Guyana Police Force defeated the Guyana Fire Service cricket team to capture the Balram Raghubir Trophy in the final of the annual 40 overs cricket competition, which was played at the Police Sports Club, Eve Leary. Batting first the Police team rattled up a total of 177 runs and bowled out the Guyana Fire Service Team for 108 runs in their reply. Corporal 16901 George of the Police team was adjudged the Man-of-the-Match for his knock of an even 50 runs.
On their way to winning the competition which is played among the Joint Services, the Police Force defeated City Constabulary in the preliminary round and the defending champions Guyana Defence Force in the semi-final.
In the match against the Guyana Defence Force, the Police team scored 300 runs, which is the highest in the history of the competition, with the army responding with 203 runs.
The Balram Raghubir annual 40-overs cricket competition Trophy has been played for several years now within the Joint Services and was formerly the Carl Austin Trophy.
