Mashramani 2010 has been described by government as an event worth re-living, Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr Roger Luncheon disclosed at the weekly post-Cabinet media briefing today.
Dr Luncheon said the 2010 Republic Day gaiety commenced with the nationwide regional flag raising ceremonies and the enormously successful float parade in Georgetown.
He stated that with the budget debate behind them, Guyanese had every reason for changing into the celebration mode at the levels in which they did.
“This year’s float parade teemed with creativity, originality and people’s participation and the public and private sector, civil society, NGOs, mass organisations all felt the need to participate more fully than usual in this year’s event.”
Dr Luncheon noted that the 2010 Mash will go down in the annals of Republic Day celebrations as one to remember.
He added that the administration holds expectations of Guyanese to support government in successfully handling issues with the same level of enthusiasm that was shown during the celebrations.
On February 23, the streets of Guyana’s capital came alive as hundreds of resplendently decked revellers showcased their eye-catching costumes and floats, to mark Guyana’s 40th Republic Anniversary.
Twenty-seven floats, depicting various topical themes and aspects of development, attracted the admiration of the thousands who gathered to witness the parade.
The procession started off from Camp and Church Streets and moved along Church Street, into Vlissengen Road, before making its way into the National Park, Thomas Lands.
Several Government Ministries including Culture, Youth and Sport, Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Health, Amerindian Affairs, Public Service, and Banks DIH, Digicel, Carib, Body of Christ Church, and Guyana Power and Light participated in the event.
The Culture Ministry fielded a 300-strong contingent, led by Minister of Culture Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony depicting a theme based on the Low Carbon Development Strategy.
Minister Anthony said that Mashramnai 2010 was a huge success judging from the thousands of spectators and participants.
