Better sense prevailed

GUYANESE have once again shown solidarity and good judgment thwarting efforts to mislead and convince them not to attend the memorial service at Lusignan for the victims of the tragedy.

I find it inconceivable that opposition forces would try so hard to encourage family members and relatives not to attend the event, turning it into a political football. Everyone across the length and breadth of this country was traumatised by that and the subsequent Bartica tragedy and these are ways of helping those people to heal and know that they are not alone with their pain. Why would these people, who during their elections campaigns claim to care about Guyana and its people so much, use the event in this manner? It is honestly disgusting and shows exactly what the opposition forces feel for the nation.

I was happy to see the large crowd that turned out to the event, that even though the organisers catered for a large number of people and provided seating arrangements for them, these turned out to be inadequate as so many were standing. It shows how Guyanese can unite and come together to support each other in times of need and that good sense always prevails.

The large crowd of people, by their presence, showed the rest of the country that they will not allow this tragedy to fade into the past and be forgotten, but instead will join together to remember, and which also serves as a way of ensuring that mechanisms are put in place to prevent a recurrence.

Listening to the leaders at the event, I felt a sense of togetherness and unity that really speaks volumes for Guyana. Ministers of Government all echoed the same sentiments that the event will not be forgotten and have encouraged others to remember, for by remembering , we lend solidarity to the families who so need that comfort.

We should all be proud that we have a caring Government that works hard every day to ensure that our people are taken care of and always remember that actions speak louder than words. Government has, through its work, shown the Guyanese people that their well-being is what comes first and that it will continue to work towards the betterment of the people.
