Calibration and testing services offered by the GNBS
THE Laboratory Services Department (LSD) is one of the six departments that was established by the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) to better meet the needs of the industries in Guyana.
The LSD provides calibration and testing services for laboratories and companies in the areas of weights and measures (mass, length and volume), gold testing, temperature and pressure calibration, and moisture meter calibration.
To ensure traceability and accuracy of devices, calibration and testing are conducted by competent Technicians that were trained both locally and internationally.
WEIGHTS AND MEASURES CALIBRATION
In the LSD, there are primary standards for length (meter rule and gauge blocks), volume (measuring cylinders, pipettes, burettes and test measures), and standard masses that are regularly calibrated to international standards and handled and stored under specified laboratory conditions to maintain accuracy and traceability. Companies and laboratories desirous of calibrating their scales, masses, and measures can submit same to this department.
TESTING OF GOLD ARTICLES
The destructive testing of gold is also done in this department. This testing is primarily done for Gold Jewellers who are clients of the Bureau under its Product Certification Scheme and for consumers making complaints to the GNBS. Members of the public can also submit their gold jewellery for testing at a minimal cost.
TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE CALIBRATION
The department provides temperature and pressure calibrations for thermometers and pressure gauges used by laboratories and companies.
Currently, thermometers within the range of – 40 degrees and +300 degrees Celsius and pressure gauges with ranges of up to 3000 PSI can be calibrated. The GNBS will continue to take steps to expand the ranges of calibration as it relates to temperature and pressure.
CALIBRATION OF MOISTURE METERS
This is the most recent of the services offered under this department.
Moisture meters that are used by rice millers to determine the moisture content of paddy during purchase can be submitted to the GNBS for calibration.
Stakeholders are encouraged to access these services in order to maintain accurate devices and quality products to adequately meet the needs of their customers.
