On January 9, 2010 waitress Khulmattie Singh left her 224 Second Street, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, home for work. She also left her four children in the care of her mother.

Not knowing it would be her last day, she bid farewell to her mother, Chandrapattie Singh before she went on her way.

That evening, she was shot and killed when gunmen descended on the business place where she was employed. They robbed the patrons and shot two others.

This was at Safraz’s Sports Bar and Restaurant on Lamaha and David Streets, Kitty.

When the story was published, a businessman and his wife, who wish to remain anonymous, said they were moved to tears when they read of the killing in this newspaper.

They decided then and there they had to help that family especially the children.

The couple’s eight-year-old son Hurman Ganpat, a pupil of New Guyana School, yesterday presented the Singh’s eldest child, Nicholas Ramotar, with a quantity of groceries, pampers, school supplies, detergents and clothing, among other items.

The dead waitress’s eldest child accepted the gifts yesterday in the presence of family members, and they expressed their gratitude to the couple and their son.

Police reported that at about 21:10 hours on January 9, 2010 three men, two of whom were armed with handguns, attacked and robbed patrons and staff of Safraz’s Sports Bar and Restaurant at Lamaha and David Streets, Georgetown.

Police reported that three men entered the night spot and held up the patrons and staff. They then proceeded to rob several persons of their jewellery, cash and cell phones, in addition to the proceeds of the day’s sales from the bartender.

During the robbery, waitress, Khulmattie Singh, was shot to her head and killed, while patrons, Jason Montgomery, 38, an Australian National and of Subryanville; and Ronald Dhanraj, 39, of Ogle, East Coast Demerara, were also shot.
