The Government of Guyana has fully endorsed the thematic health proposal as part of a targeted response by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to assist its sister nation Haiti. Guyana has since transmitted to CARICOM its commitment to working with the Community in bringing relief to the people of Haiti.
The thematic health proposal involves the pooling of technical and humanitarian resources as a niche area of intervention in the recovery effort. This assistance will encompass emergency repair, provision of medical and support personnel to assist in the service delivery and operations, critical medical supplies, emergency supplies and security for emergency personnel in this effort.
Guyana’s endorsement of this CARICOM response is in addition to its own national mobilisation of financial and material resources for Haiti which is recovering from the devastation after last week’s earthquake.
The CDEMA (Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency) will have overall responsibility for the coordination of the Community’s response to Haiti and will also collaborate closely with PAHO.
The proposal does not prevent individual member states from providing additional resources as they deem necessary.
