No word on whether any Guyanese perished in the Haiti quake

GUYANESE are known to reside in almost every country in the world. They are known to be in Iceland, Lebanon and other far-flung countries.

When terrorists attacked the World Trade Centre in New York on September 11, 2001, a total of 26 Guyanese were among the 3000 dead.

But as Guyana joins with the rest of its CARICOM sister states, and the world, in coming to grips with scenes of devastation in wake of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake which hit the impoverished island on Tuesday, there is no word of whether there are any Guyanese victims or casualties.

Director General in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and CARICOM Ambassador, Elisabeth Harper, when contacted yesterday by the Chronicle, while not ruling out that there may have been Guyanese residing on the island, said the Ministry does not have any such information.

She noted, too, that the Ministry has not been contacted or approached by anyone or any relative with regards to seeking assistance in locating a loved one on the island, following the earthquake which has left tens of thousands dead and millions more missing or affected.
Among the missing are UN staffers including peacekeepers. (Wendella Davidson)
