I agree with Chronicle’s editorial on Lawless road users

I COULD not agree more with the Editorial in yesterday’s edition of the Chronicle under the headline: ‘Lawless road-users’.

I just want to add a little more to it as I have experience this a lot while in Guyana.

Mr. Editor, I agree with everything you said, but I just want to make a few pointers in defence of some minibus operators.

We live in a capitalist society and they are trying to earn the most money they can. The passengers have to share some of the blame here as ‘they go for the shine buses’. There is no excuse for the buses breaking the law.

Secondly, the government should implement a ‘license point system’. This has to be policed. However, I believe the current system in Guyana is not ready for this, as it boils down to ‘who you know’ and ‘how much you can pay’. My recommendation is to jail a few and they will get the message.

Thirdly, there are too many buses on the road; the authorities should put quotas on the importation of these buses and limit the number of road service license.

This would reduce the amount of competition as the buses would ‘run fuller’ and does not need to run half empty or ‘cut the road’. This would solve the fare problem (less operation cost), speeding (less trips), noise (limited choice of buses, more policing can be done), traffic congestion (less vehicles on the road, etc).

Am I hitting something or do I have some merit to it?
