-fetes children from various Homes,Orphanages
THE Ministry of Human Services and Social Security’s Child Care and Protection Agency yesterday joined the Chinese embassy in hosting a rollicking Christmas Party for children from the various homes and orphanages across the country at Castellani Villas on Homestretch Avenue here in the city.
According to Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Ms Priya Manickchand, who was on hand to see that things went as planned, said the government has been paying keen attention to child protection and on advancing its policy to protect children.
Yesterday’s activity, she said, was evidence of the administration’s commitment and dedication to the protection of children.
“We know it’s Christmas, and children look forward to Christmas, and so we are happy to be hosting the Christmas party. It gives the children and caregivers an opportunity to interact and share things, and discuss issues that might be challenging,” the minister said.
The event saw in attendance over 700 children from homes and orphanages in Regions Three (West Demerara/Essequibo Islands), Four (Demerara/Mahaica), Six (East Berbice/Corentyne) and Ten (Upper Demerara/Berbice).
On July 28, the Child Protection Agency was launched by President Bharrat Jagdeo. Prior to that, various legislative measures were identified to further ensure that children are safeguarded from all forms of abuse. There are currently 21 homes in Guyana.
China’s Ambassador to Guyana, Mr Zhang Jun Gao expressed appreciation at having had the opportunity of joining the Christmas Party. He said the occasion was special to him, as it was the first time he would celebrate Christmas with Guyanese children.
He lauded the government for its commitment and dedication to the vulnerable. “They are the future of the nation, and I can clearly say that the government of Guyana takes an active interest in the health and growth of the children… So that is why the Chinese Embassy joined today to host this party with the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security,” Ambassador Zhang said.
He said that such an activity is a fitting example of how the government takes care of society’s children, particularly the ones that are deemed vulnerable.
The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security is working on ensuring that children who are among the less fortunate enjoy their Christmas holidays. Santa Claus and staff of the ministry distributed toys to the children.
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, who is performing the duties of President in the absence of Mr Jagdeo, was also in attendance and used the opportunity to interact with the children during the event. (GINA)
