-he severely injures man
A ‘QUACK’, who extracted a man’s tooth and caused five injuries to the man’s mouth, was yesterday fined $250 by Magistrate Harold Bollers.
The ‘quack’, Badri Persaud of 10 Garnett Street, Campbelville, pleaded guilty to the charge of illegal practising of dentistry.
The man whose tooth Persaud had extracted was subsequently examined by Dr Tallim, who had found the man to be suffering from five injuries, including haemorrhage, with two other teeth broken, one to the root.
Persaud was arrested and charged as a result of a police trap.
He was an ‘impostor’, not even a technician, who had acquired some measure of proficiency,” said Asst. Superintendent, Carl Austin, who prosecuted.
Mr Austin asked the Magistrate to take a serious view of the case.
Asked what he had to say, Persaud told Mr Bollers: “Ah working in the backdam, Sir. I nevah do this type of work before, but people come and progue me.”
The Magistrate then observed that it seemed very clear that the defendant was a man who carried on his illegal practice widely, as the police had found at his home a quantity of implements, including a syringe.
Mr Austin pointed out that the defendant could not plead sudden temptation, as the decoy used by the Police had been to him two days before the extraction.
On that day, he had injected the man’s gums, but had sent him away, because he said that the man was under the influence of alcohol.
Imposing his fine, the Magistrate told Persaud that it was only because he had pleaded guilty and had thrown himself at the mercy of the Court, and that there was nothing known against him, that he was not imposing a heavier penalty.

Proprietor of hotel fined for weak rum
‘BALLEE’, the proprietor of Ballerina Hotel, on Lombard Street, was yesterday fined $50 by Magistrate RG Sharples for selling rum to be taken off the premises.
‘Ballee’, who pleaded guilty, was also fined $25 for having weak rum in his bar.
The charges followed a raid by Excise Officials on October 18 last year.
Mr Lionel Luckhoo, QC, who appeared for ‘Ballee’, explained that the defendant was not in charge of the bar. He had a barman. He therefore could not really account for the weakness of the rum.
On the other charge, Mr Luckhoo explained that ‘Ballee’s grandson was left in the bar, and that it was he who had sold the rum to be taken off the premises.
‘Ballee’ admitted one previous conviction, for having weak rum. That was in 1953, when he was fined $15.

Beef control ends in September
GOVERNMENT will decontrol beef sometime in September next after 14 years.
Beef, which has been heavily subsidised by the government, will then be placed on the market in adequate supplies.
Yesterday, the Association pointed out that livestock and meat control has, under post-war conditions, sought to continue a wartime policy of price control, aimed at ensuring meat supplies and to protect the consumer from rising prices of meat.
The causes of the diminishing supply of meat may be briefly stated as follows:
Reduced production of cattle; diminishing pasture; effect of the milk control on calf mortality; incentives by Government to increase rice production; and lack of any agricultural policy for increasing beef production.

Good manners
– lubricant of society
DECLARING that good manners was the lubricant of society, Mr J R Muss, Hon. Secretary Treasurer of the Society for the Promotion of Refinement among Children told Radio Demerara listeners yesterday afternoon that it enabled various sections to live and work together harmoniously.
The pleasant-voiced retired government archivist was delivering the Society’s annual New Year message.
Stating that the Society was non-political, and was not a charitable organisation, Mr Muss said it yet benefited the whole community.
He expressed disappointment, however, over the fact that after this country had been British for more than a century, more knowledge of the rules of western civilization had not been acquired by many people.

Battle of the sexes…
The husband’s commandments
THOU must have no man but me
Thou shalt not have a photo of any man but thy husband
Thou shalt not keep it in secret, for I am a jealous husband
Thou shalt not speak thy husband’s name with levity
Honour thy husband and obey him
Thou shalt not find fault when thy husband chews and smokes
Thou shalt not permit thy husband to wear a buttonless shirt
but shall keep his clothes in good repair
Thou shalt not continually gad about neglecting
Thy husband and family
Thou shalt not strive to live in the style of thy neighbour
Unless thy husband is able to support it
Commandments of a wife
Remember, I am thy wife
Whom thou must cherish as thy life
Thou shalt not stay out late at night
When Lodges, clubs, or friends invite
Thou shalt not smoke indoors or out
Or chew tobacco round about
My mother thou shalt strive to please
And have her live with us in ease
Remember tis thy duty clear
To dress me well throughout the year
Thou shalt not be a drinking man
And should have a prohibition plan
Thou shalt not flirt, but must
Allow thy wife such freedom anyhow
Thou shalt get up when baby cries
And try the child to tranquilise

BG best of the Guianas
THAT British Guiana is the best of the three Guianas for tourists was the view expressed by Mr William Begg, station master of Pan American (World) Airways at Cayenne, French Guiana.
Accompanied by his wife, he arrived in the colony yesterday to spend a two-week vacation.
Originally, they had intended going on a world tour, but instead changed their minds in preference to British Guiana, as the country was so nice.
Mr and Mrs Begg have traveled throughout the world.
Mr Begg knows the three Guianas very well.
