US fugitive Ghalee Khan makes another court appearance

– Special Prosecutor expected to be appointed
MAGISTRATE Priya Beharry on Monday said that, based on information she received from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), a Special Prosecutor would be appointed in the drug case against US fugitive Ghalee Khan.

She informed Khan’s lawyer, Mr. Glen Hanoman, of this when the accused made another court appearance in Georgetown.

Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said further investigations were being conducted and, because a number of things were revealed, requested another adjournment in the matter.

Harvey said he was not in a position to proceed but maintained that he was opposing bail for Khan.

The Magistrate said that before the court can proceed with the matter, the Prosecution must be able to state whether or not the witness will be in court to give evidence.

She asked Harvey to make sure the witness is present in court on the next occasion and said she also expects the new prosecutor to be present.

Hanoman was unsuccessful at renewing his bail application.

He told the court he was worried about Khan’s medical condition.

Magistrate Beharry adjourned the case to August 20.

Khan, of Lot 498 Cane View Avenue, South Ruimveldt Park, in the city and Lot 1419 New York Avenue, New York, has pleaded not guilty to having, on October 23, 2008, at Diamond, also on East Bank Demerara, trafficked in three kilogrammes 408 grammes of cocaine, by supplying the quantity to convicted prisoner Orlando Dwayne Humphrey also known as Orlando Dwayne Ifill.

Khan jumped bail in the United States on a similar charge last year.
