PPP condemns ‘mischievous’ statement by Corbin

‘Corbin’s remarks that what took place in Honduras was not a ‘traditional coup’, whatever that means, is utter nonsense.’
THE People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has condemned the statement by Leader of the Opposition People’s National Congress/Reform (PNC/R) Mr. Robert Corbin, as appeared in yesterday’s edition of the Kaieteur News, in which he has practically supported the coup in Honduras.

The PPP issued a response yesterday, pointing out that Corbin’s remarks that what took place in Honduras was not a ‘traditional coup’, whatever that means, is “utter nonsense”.

The fact is that the Army seized power in that country and expelled the democratically elected President, the PPP said.

“What more traditional does he want? To say the Court prevented (President) Zalaya from going to a referendum is illogical. A referendum is part of a democratic process in which the people will decide. That is the highest court,” the release stated.

Moreover, the PPP insisted that Corbin is trying to make mischief by attempting to try to draw similarities between Honduras and Guyana.

“In this process he has deliberately distorted events. It is a bold face lie to say that Mrs. Jagan was sworn in against a court order and Mr. Corbin knows that it is untrue Mrs. Jagan was sworn in long before any court order was issued and served,” the PPP said.

Also, in relation to the Public Procurement Commission not being set up, the party said, “that too must be put at the door of the PNC/R”, noting that the PNCR “did everything to frustrate the process when the law was passed (and) now they want to blame the government for their own sabotage of the many processes.”

According to the Kaieteur News report, Corbin has warned that Guyanese should take cognizance of what has recently taken place in Honduras and what was the catalyst for the unrest.

“Corbin, as is well known, is in serious trouble in his own party. He is maybe trying to use that irresponsible statement to demonstrate his militancy to his colleagues as he approaches the Congress of his party scheduled for next month,” the PPP asserted.
