‘Queens of Squash’ off to defend titles at CASA Championships

WITH the throes of the recently concluded National Senior Championships still fresh in their minds, Keisha Jeffrey, Mary Fung-A-Fat and Victoria Arjoon, Guyana’s queens of squash are off to Barbados to compete in this year’s Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Junior Championships.

They were dubbed the ‘Queens of Squash’ after a superb showing at the championships last year in Bermuda where Jeffrey claimed the U-17 singles championship, Fung-A-Fat the U-15 singles championship and Arjoon the U-13 championship.

The girls were just as effective collectively as they also copped the title of Girls’ Team champions. It is mainly because of their successful exploits that Guyana were the overall winners of last year’s championships.

This year, however, a lot of pressure will be on Arjoon as she will be making her U-15 debut.

The girls’ team will feature Ashley Khalil, Keisha and Kayla Jeffrey, Mary Fung-A-Fat and Victoria Arjoon.

A few fresh faces will be added to the line-up as Akeela Wiltshire and Gabrielle Fraser will be on board to compete in the U-13 singles and teams competitions.

The boys deserve mention also, as they will be defending the Boys’ Team championship. Although they could not secure any individual titles last year they did Guyana proud in securing the Boys’ Team title.

Jason Ray Khalil, Alexander Arjoon, Deje Dias, Raphael DeGroot, Nyron Joseph, Steven Xavier and Shem Marcus make up this year’s Boys’ Team.

Individual campaigners include Alysa Xavier, Taylor Fernandes, Larissa Wiltshire, Jean Claude Jeffrey, Daina King and Ashley DeGroot.

The team is expected to depart Guyana today for the championships which open tomorrow.
